![]() I've managed quite well for many years with traditional headlight technology. 99 of the replacement LED headlight bulbs on the market are inferior to an OEM halogen bulb, let alone an upgraded halogen option. The steering responsive feature is awesome, but if it costs an arm and a leg to replace, I'm not sure I want it. The LED housings are an optional full replacement headlamp, not bulbs. If you are looking for the brightest headlight bulb then just go for Cougar Motor H11 LED Brightest Headlight Bulbs. Hopefully, as the designs mature, these issues will be resolved. The best headlight bulb is Philips 85126C1. Retrofits are generally a gamble, and often downright unsafe, but, from what I've read, some of the most modern stock LED headlights from major automakers are actually less safe than old halogen technology (mostly lower cost vehicles, of course). There is also a large heatsink to draw away the heat that the LEDs emit. However, there is one big flaw, the LEDs can only emit light in one direction, that is perpendicular to the surface that it is mounted on. LED are cheaper to build, last longer, provide greater visibility for the driver, and increase visibility. If we compare the two bulbs above, we can notice how the LED tries to mimic the halogen as best as it can. After getting used to driving cars with LED headlights, anything with halogens feels borderline unsafe to drive at night. HIDs fail either at the capsule or the ballast, neither of which will cost you much more than $100 to replace, and replacement is simple. Theres so many newer Mercedes with halogens, and they instantly look so much cheaper. It sounds as though these LED units are not serviceable, although I haven't seen much posted on the topic. ![]() At this point, I think maintenance costs might favor HIDs since I've come across at least one report here of an Outback owner having to replace a single stock LED headlight and their dealer billed $800 for the repair. ![]() ![]() The high power LED is certainly the more promising technology, but it's a bit early to get a clear picture in terms of performance and reliability. I think the takeaway here is that both technologies can give excellent results when properly implemented, but you're not guaranteed any particular level of performance with any light source. ![]()
